Blog established October 2016.
Hello, my name is James and I would like to thank you for visiting my page. As you can gather by creating a blog about books, I love reading. I also enjoy playing 8-ball pool, playing Xbox, keeping fit and studying. I recently passed my Certificate of Insurance (Cert CII) and my Certificate in Online Marketing. I am currently studying towards my Insurance Diploma as well as a handful of free online courses. I live in the West Midlands, UK and studied at Aberystwyth University. In an ideal world, when I am 35 I would love to study another degree and hopefully get invited to a secret cult where lecturers and geniuses discuss nonsensical nothingness over expensive wine. I thoroughly enjoy conversing with people from all walks of life. I believe everyone has a story to tell that I want to hear. I like a wide range of music but mostly extreme metal, rap, punk and musical theatre soundtracks. Few random points: I played in the Welsh amateur dodgeball open, I am ambidextrous, I was a county swimmer and gymnast and I have tickets to go see Hamilton in London next year!
I was reading a fair amount and saw all these cool kids on Goodreads reviewing books and getting loads of likes so I thought I would give it ago. To begin with, my reviews were nonsense rubbish I threw together in two and a half minutes. The very first reviews posted on this blog aren’t very good but I leave them there because it shows my journey. About 5 months ago I made it to the UK’s 97th best weekly reviewer on Goodreads and I thought that was super cool and I started taking it a bit more seriously. Since then I am a lot higher ranked on Goodreads. See http://www.goodreads.com/youandi if you have a spare few minutes. I created this blog as more of a hobby than anything. I saw one lady on Goodreads whose blog had a million hits and her reviews were terrible!! Since then, I have started writing for http://www.fantasybookreview.co.uk which receives around 100,000 hits a month and have started flaunting with twitter to chat with other bloggers and authors to discuss all things bookish. I can’t believe how much has changed in six months. I now often get my pick of books that I want to review from publishers, chat to amazing authors and talk to writers/contributors from some of the biggest reviewing sites in the world. It is awesome!! 🙂
At the moment I am not accepting any new review requests from independent authors. I have a small backlog of independent books which I am currently working through alongside books from NetGalley and from publishers. I should be reaccepting around June time.
I rate out of 10 and if I see befitting I will rate with a .5 if, for me, I feel it is between the rates on the below scale.
10 – Out of this world. Breathtaking. It will probably be one of my top 10 books of all time.
9 – Amazing. Excellent. This is generally the highest rating I will give.
8 – Very good. So close to being a favourite. It had a lot of great things going for it.
7 – Good. An enjoyable book that does a lot of things right but with some flaws.
6 – Pretty good. Glad that I read this but I will probably have forgotten about it in a years time.
5 – Average. OK-ish. Meh. Unmemorable but not too bad.
4 – Below par. It had some redeemable qualities but a lot more negative elements than positive.
3 – Bad. The lowest rating I will give a book that I finish. If you ask me about books with this rating it will probably put me in a bad mood.
2 – Very Bad. I probably wouldn’t have finished this. Too many negative issues and it gave me a headache.
1 – Worst thing I have ever read. I want my money back and I just frisbeed this book out of the window. (Or deleted it from my Kindle in a fit of rage!)
Note: As of yet I haven’t registered a book as being did not finish. I will always read 35% or 150 pages (whichever is less) as I believe this amount allows the story to give a fair representation of itself.
All reviews and opinions are my own. Although I will always be critical should I need to be, I am a positive person and even if I don’t necessarily enjoy what I am reading, I will still look for the pros and well as the cons. If you wish to contact me to discuss anything e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Here is another picture of Chow Yun Fat for your enjoyment seeing as the old one was deleted for no reason. Grrr!
